Example 1: Unequal expressions

Select the appropriate symbol to make each equation correct.
6 × 7 25 + 20

Solve the two expressions and compare.
6 × 7   ?   25 + 20
42   ?   45
42 is less than 45 so the answer is 6 × 7 25 + 20


Example 2: Equal expressions

Select the appropriate symbol to make each equation correct.
17 + 4 3 × 7

Solve the two expressions and compare.
17 + 4   ?   3 × 7
21   ?   21
21 is equal to 21 so the answer is 17 + 4 3 × 7
