Here are some tips for Fraction Simplification, which aligns with Florida state standards:

Fraction Simplification

Step One: Extract the Whole Number

If the numerator is larger than the denominator, then your fraction is larger than 1. In this case, divide the numerator by the denominator. Add the result to your whole number. Use the remainder as the new numerator.

Simplify 2
6
4
6 is larger than 4, so divide 6/4 to get 1 remainder 2.
Add the result to get the whole number: 2 + 1 = 3
This leaves us with 3
2
4

Step Two: Reduce the Fraction

Now find the GCF of the numerator and denominator. Divide both the numerator and the denominator by the GCF.

The GCF of 2 and 4 is 2
Numerator: 2/2 = 1
Denominator: 4/2 = 2

This leaves us with 3
1
2
