Understanding Multiplication
To master multiplication, you need to know how to add.
To review addition, see the topics Fast Addition and Addition Grouping.
Multiplication is repeated addition.
3 groups of 2 = 6 Addition: 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 Multiplication: 2 × 3 = 6 or 3 × 2 = 6
Example:
There are 12 blue squares.
2 rows of 6 blue squares = 12 blue squares, or
2 × 6 = 12
6 columns of 2 blue squares = 12 blue squares, or
6 × 2 = 12So 2 × 6 = 6 × 2 = 12
The order of how you multiply does not matter. You get the same answer.
